The Almighty Ringgit,
Sorry folks, I don’t earn in USD, AUD, or SGD ( the tiny island nation - south of us). Hence, the title The Almighty Ringgit (RM or MYR) - although it has seen better and worse days, this is where I am from, and I earn my income. While everything boat-related costs are in, likely USD or Euros, I sourced materials for Destiny. I had to contend with terms where my local currency only buys between 20 and 40% of the value of those currencies.
Deciding to leave meant contending with these sorts of ex-rates. This is the preamble to decision-making.
What are the things I need to consider?
1) How much would it cost to sail for a year? Most literature puts the number ( in US) between USD 25 -100K - this can vary according to individuals. Just to put it in perspective, taking a low USD 25K, which people told me is VERY low. This equates to approximately RM 120K, a lot of money in Malaysian earning power.
2) Do I fly back on off-seasons? Again, more costs? I told myself I had to do this!
3) Where do I leave Destiny when I am away? Since I would be leaving in Marina’s or (very Safe) moorings ( which I am still uncomfortable with),
the costs will surely mount.
4) House and Car Mortgage
5) Kids education
6) Maintain a second home - where the family and the biggest kid in our life - Loki the German Shepard.
